Why We Care About Financial Planning

Your money is a big deal. Not because money itself is important, but because money provides the opportunity to live the life you envision. Money can provide a lifetime of wealth when it is purposefully managed for the things that matter most in your life. That sort of wealth does not happen naturally, regardless of how much money you may have. It requires planning and ongoing actions. It is like a “wealth path for life” that will guide your steps to make continual progress in the right direction. Whether that is focused on financial independence, pursuing your passions, charitable giving, educating the next generation, leaving a legacy, or any other goal that matters deeply to you; we want you to have a compelling vision and a clear path.

That may seem obvious, and it is actually pretty simple. But we have learned that it is not easy. Life is busy, news and world events cause distraction, life events and milestones cause excitement, fear and uncertainty, as does your investment portfolio. Many of us struggle to clearly see what matters most and what should be the focus of our wealth management plan. Simple but not easy; yet of critical importance.

It is natural to focus on investments, as investments are a tangible aspect of wealth. While wise investing is an absolutely critical part of wealth management, it is only one part of many. So we suggest starting with a plan. Developing a personal plan that is uniquely suited to you and your family will provide a foundation to build on. With a solid plan in place, you can be sure that you have an investment strategy that makes sure your investments are working intentionally toward your goals.

With the foundation of a good financial plan, you are in position to effectively manage all aspects of your wealth. Your plan lets you see where you are now, where you want to go, and develop a path to get from here to there. Along with your investment strategy, your unique and clear path also guides tax planning, risk management, and cash flow decisions, all working together for your goals.

As strongly as we believe in starting with a sound plan, we also believe in the process of ongoing planning. As life marches on and you progress down your unique path, assumptions eventually turn into reality and new information helps guide future actions. In other words, as life happens you must pay attention and make sure you stay on the right path that has your wealth working towards the life you envision. Awareness and the occasional course correction are necessary at every stage to be sure your wealth is working for your life.

Start with clarifying your goals, then develop investment, tax, risk management, and other strategies to build out a personal financial plan. Pay attention along the way to make sure you stay on the right path. A plan is great, but is not enough. Ongoing financial planning is what will get you to where you want to go.
